The Borderski team spent a month edging along Tajikistan’s frontiers with Afghanistan, China, and Kyrgyzstan. Marco Polo sheep tend to migrate in the cold heart of winter, making this the perfect time to document the herd’s transboundary movements and thwarted movements—but a challenging time for a ski trip.
The team faced a brutal combination: poor snow cover, and near-polar conditions. Still, we managed to link up snowy valleys and explore 265 km in the borderlands of the Pamir mountains. The final route included ski (blue, green, pink) and jeep (red) segments. Camps are marked in yellow. On the way, we found many animal tracks and signs, and were thrilled to spot several herds of Marco Polo sheep and ibex scampering up steep mountainous terrain.
